Michael Davitt Museum

The Michael Davitt Museum is in the village of Straide, County Mayo, on the N58 between Ballyvary and Foxford. It is dedicated to the life and legacy of Michael Davitt, who was born and raised in Straide.

The museum is housed in a restored pre-Penal church beside the 13th-century Straide Friary, founded in 1249. Davitt is buried in the cemetery behind the museum.

Its collection includes artefacts and many of Davitt’s personal belongings, among them original documents, photographs, Land Acts, letters, postcards and posters.

The museum describes guided tours that begin with a short documentary and continue through the exhibits with a guide. An outdoor tour leads to the cemetery and the friary, and guides also tell the story of the Famine Relief bridge.

The museum invites visitors to discover the area where Davitt was born, evicted and laid to rest. Check the official website for current opening hours and admission prices before you visit.
