Kiltimagh Museum is in the former goods store of Kiltimagh railway station in County Mayo. The town’s Historical Society acquired the building in the 1980s and turned it into a museum, which was officially opened in June 1989.
Two old railway carriages were added to commemorate the thousands of local people who had to emigrate. The museum’s own account recalls the 1940s and 1950s, when the station platform was crowded with emigrants taking leave of wives, family and friends on their way to work in Britain.
The museum houses artefacts from the area’s past, including a Land League banner that was buried in a bog for forty years, the instruments of the 19th-century town band, items from Kiltimagh Lace School and railway artefacts.
The former Station Master’s House is now an art centre, and the area includes sculptures by local artists and by artists from elsewhere in Ireland.
