Clew Bay Heritage Centre is a museum at The Quay in Westport. Its website presents Westport Historical Society’s genealogical research service for families who lived in Westport and the Clew Bay area of west Mayo.
Reports draw on census, property and vital records (birth or baptism, marriage and death), and on sources the society describes as unique to its collection: local school registers, estate rent rolls and cemetery records.
The service begins with a preliminary enquiry form. The society assesses whether a report is feasible before any fee is charged, and asks people not to be deterred if they cannot answer many of the form’s questions.
In the museum, guides use a scale model of Westport town and quay to illustrate the town’s history from the 16th century to the present day. Displays cover the port of Westport, Grace O’Malley and the O’Malley clan, Croagh Patrick, and Ireland’s struggle for independence.
The centre also runs free guided walks of Westport from July to September and can arrange group visits. Check the official website for current opening months, hours and fees before you visit or send an enquiry.
