The Clarke Museum of Irish History is on Pearse Street in Ballina, County Mayo. It was inspired by the vision of Jackie Clarke (1927 to 2000), whose widow Anne Clarke gifted his collection to Mayo County Council in 2005.
The museum describes the collection as comprising over 100,000 items and spanning 400 years, including rare books, maps, newspapers and historical objects. Selected highlights are on display, among them an original 1916 Proclamation.
Visits are self-guided, and guided tours of the museum and its heritage garden are available by advance booking. The museum’s website states that admission is free.
Beyond the galleries, the museum’s Repository supports research and access to collection material. It is located off-site at Ballina Library, where material can be viewed by appointment.
Exhibitions listed on the website include the War of Independence from Mayo and Ballina perspectives. Check the official website for current opening hours before you visit.
